Homemade Cream Of Wheat

When the cold weather sets in, I often find myself taking care of the little things that need wrapped up. In the afternoon the weather turns cold and often I have already taken off my long sleeves… But when I get inside, there are a few cereals that I often enjoy to help warm me up.

Like coming in from sled riding as a kid, Mom often had a pot of Cream of Wheat started.. It was always Butter, Brown Sugar and made with Goats milk, Cows milk if we had some. Sometimes, as a treat, we’d have some of Grandpa’s Maple Syrup on top, but that was rare. I always liked a little more butter than everyone else, that is just the way I like it…

It is simply made, although bought cheaply back in those days, I tend to make my own batches from the hard white wheat berries these days, but I still buy it and eat my more coarse ground in between store bought stuff. Wheat grows like crazy here on the homestead, and with the rising food cost, cereal is another one that is going up.

Using white hard wheat ( also called wheat berries ) bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes or until golden brown… Once cooled, grind it coarsely , almost like coarse ground black pepper. Put 2 3/4 cups of milk or water in a pot, 1/2 teaspoon of butter ( more if you like ) tablespoon of brown sugar, bring to a boil, slowly add ground wheat, reduce heat for 3 minutes and remove. Serve with more brown sugar on the side, a little butter…. It is this simple…
